The process starts with obtaining a clear understanding of the purpose and requirements for a given piece of hardware. Engineers and designers draft detailed schematics, diagrams and prepare 3D models using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Component selection and procurement are also part of this phase.
At the early stages, designers may create a breadboard prototype or use simulation software to validate the initial design. Breadboarding involves connecting components on a temporary board to check basic functionality and test key circuits.
Once the initial design is confirmed, the next step is designing the printed circuit board (PCB) layout. The PCB layout includes the arrangement of components, traces and power planes.
A prototype PCB is manufactured based on the PCB design. This involves sending the design files to a PCB manufacturer, who produces the physical board.
If the hardware involves embedded systems, microcontrollers or digital components, firmware or software development is necessary. The firmware is uploaded to the hardware for testing.
